Beach at Bay St. Louis, Mississippi on Thursday, November 17, 2005 during the
DreamYard/ Mississippi Whole Schools Initiative- Post-Katrina Arts
Partnership
On Thursday, November 17, 2005, 80 students from three Mississippi high
schools came together to fly kites created from the debris of Hurricane Katrina on the beach at Bay St. Louis, a Gulf town destroyed by the Hurricane in August. Students, teachers and principals from Ocean Springs High School, Laurel High School and Bay St. Louis High Schools, in collaboration with the Mississippi Whole Schools Initiative and DreamYard worked with DreamYard teaching artists to write monologues and community poems and to build three-foot square kites made with wood gathered from the wreckage left by the Hurricane. The poetry and monologues are a featured link on the Whole Schools website (www.mswholeschools.org) and adorned the kites as the students flew them in the wind above the beach.
